The best thing to spin on a Dieter Rams record player

Brian Eno is releasing his Dieter Rams documentary soundtrack on a suitably minimal, limited edition, vinyl LP to mark Record Store Day

Dieter Rams has managed to apply his exacting, minimalist design approach to a huge range of products, as our new book, Dieter Rams: The Complete Works, make clear. His role call of achievements features everything from chairs to radios, shelving systems to record players.

Now, to mark 2020 Record Store Day, Brian Eno is releasing his soundtrack to the 2018 Dieter Rams documentary Rams, and he has ensured that Rams' Ten Principles for Good Design (the most famous of which is ‘good design is as little design as possible’) have been applied to the LP’s sleeve’s design.

The 11 track instrumental album will be pressed on to heavyweight white vinyl and packaged in a simple sleeve featuring a head shot of the designer, which, as Eno writes in a recent Instagram post, is in keeping with “Rams’ principles on minimal design.”

The release, which comes with digital download codes, is available as a limited pressing of 2,500 copies via participating record on Record Store Day, which falls on 29 August this year. We can’t think of anything better to put on an SK 5 integrated record player and radio, which was developed by Dieter Rams and Hans Gugelot at Braun in 1958 (pictured above). You can find out more about that and much more in our new book Dieter Rams: The Complete Works; meanwhile, for more on high-fidelity design, take a look at Hi-Fi.
