We can’t drop in on artists’ studios at the moment, but last week Phaidon and RxArt offered the next best thing, when Sharon Coplan Hurowitz and Amanda Benchley, authors of our new book Open Studio: Do-It-Yourself Art Projects By Contemporary Artists, hosted a talk with the Californian siblings and artistic duo, the Haas Brothers.
During this ticketed talk, which benefited RxART – a nonprofit organisation that places contemporary art in hospitals – Simon and Nikolai Haas spoke from their studio, telling Hurowitz and Benchley how their work has changed over the years; about the vernacular beading techniques they’ve picked up from women they collaborate with in Cape Town, South Africa and Lost Hills, CA; and about the creative family heritage in the Haas clan: their father was a sculptor and their mother was an opera singer before becoming a screenwriter.
