New Books for the New Year: Keith Haring in 3D

The love for Keith Haring and the 80s New York era he helped define has not waned in the years since his untimely death, from an AIDS-related illness at the age of 31, in 1990.

There is a constant stream of Haring exhibitions around the world, from LA to Tokyo to Melbourne. Meanwhile, a TV biopic based on the recent biography—Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring, is currently in development, helmed by All of Us Strangers director Andrew Haigh.

Along with Haring’s some-time collaborators, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, Haring’s name usually springs to the lips of anyone asked to name a legendary artist from the past 50 years. The iconic figures that repeat through his work: radiant babies, hovering angels, dancing dogs, and buoyant phalluses, are immediately recognizable and evoke a bygone, less polished New York, dear to the hearts of all who experienced it.

Our new book, Keith Haring in 3D is an unprecedented contribution to the existing writings on the artist and will publish to coincide with a major exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art this year.

Immersing the reader in an under-explored aspect of Haring’s work, the book dramatically expands our understanding of the range of three-dimensional mediums Haring took as his canvas—from found fiberglass and taxi hoods, to fabricated steel sculptures, leather, clothing, and people.

These remarkable works go far beyond the murals so many of us love. Included here, too, are collaborative works with Jean-Michel Basquiat, the street artist Angel Ortiz (LA 2), Kenny Scharf, and more. The book also features rarely seen photographs by Haring’s close friend, the photographer Tseng Kwong Chi.
