One hundred years ago, Phaidon invented the art book.

Phaidon was founded in Vienna by Dr. Béla Horovitz, Frederick 'Fritz' Ungar, and Ludwig Goldschneider. Their vision was to create elegantly produced, accessibly priced art books – something that had not been done before.

Today, Phaidon is the leading global publisher of the creative arts with over 1,500 titles in print. We work with the world’s most influential artists, chefs, writers, and thinkers to produce innovative books on art, photography, design, architecture, fashion, food, and travel, and illustrated books for children.

In 2014, Phaidon welcomed Artspace, and, in 2020, the prestigious publishing house Monacelli.

As a leading publisher of illustrated books for more than 25 years, Monacelli has challenged the conventions of publishing to produce provocative, inspiring, and essential titles.

Founded in 1994 by Gianfranco Monacelli, the organization has released nearly 600 books on architecture, art, interior design, landscape and gardens, photography, and the applied arts.

Monacelli’s books have been made in collaboration with prominent practitioners and scholars ever since its inaugural title, the groundbreaking S,M,L,XL by Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau. In 2015, the applied arts imprint Monacelli Studio was launched, adding elevated books on art instruction, photography technique, and crafts to the publisher’s roster. In 2020, Monacelli joined the Phaidon family of companies.

Phaidon Kids is a global publisher of bestselling, groundbreaking, and critically acclaimed children's books on a range of topics – from astronomy and the natural world to cooking and the creative arts.

In 2005, Phaidon published The Art Book for Children, a kid-friendly adaptation of the global sensation The Art Book. Inspired by Phaidon's ethos, the Phaidon Kids list evolved to include books in the categories of art, food, science, fashion, and more.
