Project Editor, Children’s Books

An exciting job opportunity has arisen in our New York office for a highly creative, collaborative, and experienced Children’s Book Project Editor.

The successful candidate will play a key role in growing the children’s list, working closely with a highly passionate and innovative team to create unique and inspiring titles for children. They will manage all aspects of book-making, from pre-acquisitions through to publication. They will be extremely organized, be able to manage multiple project schedules and budgets independently, have a keen eye for detail, and the ability to multi-task. They will be in charge of project managing front and back list titles from concept through to final files, working internally with editorial, design, production, sales, marketing, and publicity colleagues, as well as externally with freelancers, foreign publishers, agents, authors, and illustrators. The Editor will make sure projects run smoothly and to budget as well as manage all stages of editing, from structural edits through to final proofreading.

The successful candidate will have a specific knowledge of and passion for children’s books, be full of creative ideas, demonstrate an ability to develop age-appropriate content, as well as substantial project-management and editing experience in children’s book publishing (schedule and budget management skills are essential). They will also have expert writing and oral communication skills and be extremely collaborative.

The Editor will also have a good grasp of the children’s book marketplace and trends, be attuned to market sensitivities, and know how to successfully position books within the market.

This is a hybrid working position with in-office responsibilities. The salary for this position is $65,000-$70,000.

Job Summary:

To manage all aspects of the book-making process, from the early stages of concepting new projects to the final handover to production and beyond, working internally with editorial, design, production, sales, marketing, and publicity colleagues, as well as externally with freelancers, foreign publishers, agents, authors, and illustrators.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work as a key member of the Children’s Publishing Team to project manage books for Phaidon’s children’s book business.
  • Evaluate potential projects (board books, novelty books, picture books, visual non-fiction books) with regard to relevancy to the audience, to the market, and to Phaidon’s list and identity.
  • Editorially manage each project from pre-acquisition through publication, supporting the children’s team in all aspects, and additionally support the marketing, publicity, and sales efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Design team and external designers throughout the editorial process regarding specs, illustration needs, routes, and illustrator support.
  • Work closely with the team to create and maintain each book’s pre-publication schedule.
  • Create project proposals, quote request forms, update company database records (Books), profit & loss statements, catalog copy, online copy, contract requests, payment requests, manage gratis lists and complete other administrative tasks relating to the children’s titles.
  • Present projects internally at various meetings including Sales Conference, and externally via the catalog and online selling copy.
  • Exhibit a willingness to consider others’ ideas and an eagerness to present their own.

Requirements and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in children’s publishing, and a specific knowledge of and passion for children’s books (ages 0–14).
  • A grasp of the North American children’s book marketplace and trends; knowledge of other countries’ markets is a plus.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects at the same time to tight deadlines.
  • Expert writing skills, oral communication skills, negotiation skills, and presentation skills.
  • Comfort level with creating and evaluating profit-and-loss statements.
  • Excellent communicator and collaborative.

Social Media Manager

Reporting to our Global Director of Digital Marketing, the Social Media Manager will play a key role in shaping our consumer-facing voice on social media and across digital channels.
