How Relevant Is Vincent van Gogh? See 10 Contemporary Echoes of the Dutch Expressionist's Masterworks

While the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, tragically, did not live see the near-mythic success his works enjoyed, artists have certainly felt the influence of this poverty-, illness-, and anxiety-ridden soul ever since his premature death. A master of vivid coloration and a distinctive fluid, sketch-like style, Van Gogh breathed new life into quotidian landscapes, still lifes, and portraits—an inspiration we continue to witness in style and subject today.

Following in queue with other great masters who have made a lasting impression, these six pairs of Post-Impressionist paintings, drawn from Phaidon’s monograph Van Gogh, in conjunction with contemporary works (now available on Artspace) boast the legacy this unsung genius has left with the art world.
