Phaidon, Artspace, and Monacelli are delighted to present Birthday Bouquet for Belen, a new limited edition by legendary feminist artist Judy Chicago. Created to mark the publication of Rainbow Dreams: Color and Light in Contemporary Art, the print reflects the same sense of wonder and visual delight that defines the book – a celebration of color in its most expressive forms.

Chicago’s Atmospheres and Smoke Sculpture series, first developed in the late 1960s, remains one of her most recognizable and influential bodies of work, known for its bold presence within natural landscapes. Birthday Bouquet for Belen extends this legacy, while also reflecting a deeply personal moment. 'For my 75th birthday, I staged a Smoke Sculpture titled A Birthday Bouquet for Belen. I decided to symbolize the richness of my life through a spectrum of colored smokes that filled the sky with swirling hues.' Plumes of saturated color rise from the ground and expand into soft clouds of blue, orange, pink, and yellow. The composition feels at once grounded, playful, and immersive.

As Chicago has described, she has come to see these works as 'painting the sky,' where 'the colored plumes rise into the air and fuse with the light to create colors that can’t be achieved any other way.'

The edition is an archival inkjet print with two layers of screenprint, finished with subtle glitter elements that enhance its vibrant colors. Produced in a limited run of 25 exclusively for Artspace, it offers a rare opportunity to collect a brand-new work by one of today’s most iconic contemporary artists. Proceeds from the sale of Birthday Bouquet for Belen benefit the Ali Forney Center, supporting LGBTQ+ youth with housing.

Birthday Bouquet for Belen is the first in a series of three editions released in conjunction with Rainbow Dreams: Color and Light in Contemporary Art. Each print is accompanied by a copy of the book.

Judy Chicago (b. 1939) is an American artist, educator, and pioneer of feminist art, renowned for her groundbreaking work exploring gender, identity, and social history. Best known for The Dinner Party (1974-79), an iconic installation celebrating women’s achievements throughout history, Chicago’s practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and education. Her work challenges traditional art hierarchies and amplifies marginalized voices, combining rigorous research with bold, symbolic imagery. Beyond her artistic output, Chicago has been a transformative teacher and author, shaping generations of artists and advancing the discourse on feminism and the arts.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
