Beloved artist, illustrator, and author Maira Kalman has generously partnered with Julie Saul Projects and BAM to release a new edition to benefit BAM’s artistic and educational programs.

Marie-Laure de Noailles in Her Paris Salon is part of a series of 60-plus paintings Kalman completed while working on a new illustrated edition of the Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, coming out in March 2020. This striking scene captures Naoilles in her salon, surrounded by art, music, and the warmth of domestic life.

Kalman has been making sense of everyday life through her extraordinary vignettes for over 30 years. Her pared-down imagery finds the beauty and humor in the human experience. Kalman’s work has been exhibited at the Jewish Museum in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and Julie Saul Gallery in New York, and on BAM’s stage.

Maira Kalman was born in Tel Aviv and moved to New York with her family at the age of four. She has worked as a designer, author, illustrator and artist for more than thirty-five years. Her work is a narrative journal of her life and all its absurdities. She has written and illustrated fourteen children's books including Ooh-la-la-Max in Love, What Pete Ate, and Swami on Rye. She often illustrates for The New Yorker magazine, and is well known for her collaboration with Rick Meyerowitz on the NewYorkistan cover in 2001. Projects include The Elements of Style (illustrated), and a monthly on-line column entitled Principles of Uncertainty (2006-07) and The Pursuit of Happiness (2008-09) for The New York Times. During 2010-12 she authored or illustrated four books including Michael Pollan’s Food Rules, and Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up.

In 2010, The Institute of Contemporary Art organized a retrospective of Kalman's work, entitled “Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World),” which traveled to The Jewish Museum, New York, NY, the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, CA, and the University of Pennsylvania.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
