Artspace is pleased to announce a new brass multiple by visionary sculptor Arlene Shechet, entitled New Dawn.

Shechet’s first limited-edition sculpture, New Dawn joins an impressive body of work by an artist who has been celebrated for her ingenuity and versatility over several decades. Featuring alternating brushed and polished brass finishes, New Dawn’s interplay of surface textures creates an array of effects in a monochrome palette. The edition has also been designed for versatility, and can be displayed as a wall-mounted relief or a freestanding object.

“Gravity is something people talk about seeing or feeling in large sculpture, but I wanted very much to have a sense of it when holding the edition. It’s a satisfying weight. You can feel and experience its ‘objectness’, and its material.” —Arlene Shechet

Shechet has immersed herself in diverse materials—from plaster and wood to ceramic and steel—since the 1990s, creating sculptures that range from intimate to monumental in scale. Her new edition pays homage to the towering sculpture Dawn on view in her critically acclaimed solo exhibition on view at Storm King Art Center in New York’s Hudson Valley. Proceeds from the sale of New Dawn will support Storm King Art Center’s artistic program and mission to nurture a vibrant bond between art, nature, and people.

“I chose this relief from the others in Girl Group at Storm King because it has planes and lines and texture. That’s almost the whole vocabulary of the large sculptures shrunk into a small, very special thing.” —Arlene Shechet

Shechet has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including All At Once (2015)—a major survey of her work at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston—and her current exhibition at Storm King Art Center. About the monumental new sculptures featured in Girl Group, Art in America noted, “These knockout works are only the latest, if possibly the greatest, evidence of Shechet’s insatiable curiosity.”

In 2023, Shechet was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This follows many other awards and honors including the Artist Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (1987); the Visual Artist Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, New York (2004); and the Painters and Sculptors Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, New York (2010), and the CAA Artist Award for Distinguished Body of Work, National Academy Induction, College Art Association (2016), among others. Shechet’s work is held in over fifty public collections worldwide, including The Centre Pompidou, Paris; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, Texas; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. She currently lives and works in New York City and The Hudson Valley.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
