Who are Max Rocha, Cig Harvey, Franco Pepe, and Iwan Baan giftng their books to?

As final shipping dates loom, here is our final author gifting story, which we hope will lend you a guiding hand when it comes to buying the loved ones in your life that special gift.

And, if you're reading this, you know that books are special. Whether it be a cookbook, the gift of possibility which hints at future dinners, (to which they will have to invite you, because you bought them the book, right?) or a photography-focused book packed with galleries through which your giftee can roam, wandering page to page, on a private tour, day or night.

When you’ve read the thoughtful and hpefully inspirational words of our authors, chefs, and photographers, head into the store where we’ll make your holiday gifting simple.

Max Rocha – chef and author of Café Cecilia

“I'd give the Cafe Cecilia Cookbook to my late granny Cecilia, who the cafe is named after. We named the cafe after her as without her there would be no Cafe Cecilia. She saved up money to get my dad to the UK from Hong Kong when he was 16 and he made such a great go of his life and gave me the opportunity to open the restaurant with him. Also, as the book is so directed towards the home cook, I feel it would work well for someone in Hong Kong who hasn't cooked the type of food we cook at the restaurant as it's simple and approachable.”

Cig Harvey – photographer and author of Emerald Drifters, Blue Violet and the editions Wisteria and Jesse on the Rocks

“I'd give Emerald Drifters to Bella Freud - I am just a true fan girl - She is just cool. Period. I love her tailored suits and I love her podcast.”

Iwan Baan – photographer featured in Vitra: The Anatomy of a Design Company

"I feel like the Vitra book would be received well by similarly like-minded people to Vitra’s Rolf Fehlbaum who has created this singular universe in a very particular place. If you’re looking at other places in the world where something like this happened places like Naoshima come to mind where people like Mr. Fukutake, from the Benesse Foundation in started in the late 80’s this incredible art archipelago on the Setouchi Islands in the Japanese inland sea.

His project is more art and architecture-focused, but also creates this kind of singular universe, in a very different context in Japan, of course. I see a relationship, in a sense, with Wolf’s work. In a similar area there is a businesswoman and social entrepreneur called Zita Cobb, in Canada, who initiated art and architecture projects on Fogo Island, in Newfoundland, at the very eastern tip of the Americas. This is also a very specific and remote location where she got several artist architects to execute her vision.

I think people who love these destinations where art, design and architecture come together  would appreciate the Vitra book. Although they work in a very different context, I think their stories align with Vitra and Rolf and I think they would be interested in the book."

Franco Pepe – chef and author of Franco Pepe: Pizza Chef

“Because I have tried with Franco Pepe Pizza Chef to hand out a message of hope - saying that you can succeed in life if you really put your heart and your mind to it - pfand because I want, in some way to inspire, I would give my book to any poor boy or girl who is feeling down and without hope. I hope it will inspire them to relight their flame and lift themselves back up. You can still dream and you can still have a future, you just have to put your mind to it.”
