Artist Eduardo Sarabia’s Favorite Works From Mexico City’s Material Art Fair 2017

Mexico-based artist Eduardo Sarabia is known best for his satirical works that explore the dark underbelly of the Mexico-US border . Born in L.A to Mexican immigrant parents, Sarabia returned to Guadalajara in 2003, where he continues to offer an insightful and humorous perspective on the post-colonial relations that have shaped a "border culture" characterized by drug trafficking, surveillance, and immigration politics. Here, Sarabia shares his thoughts about some of his favorite works from Mexico City's Material Art Fair, opening February 9th. See the full preview here.

I found this piece interesting because I am currently working with a lot of landscapes, and somehow I liked the scenario with the jungle-like fantasy world. And I like that it is not a realistic painting; it is combined with imagination.

The same happened with this work: I was attracted by the plants, the forms, and the colors. Somehow it resembled what I am working on right now—having the freedom to invent forms and colors to create a "fantastic" scene.
I saw this piece and immediately clicked on it, then realized that I already knew the work of these artists and I think they make interesting pieces. The rock is heavy—a mass that sits there in a space. The stripes also make it more attractive and somehow mysterious to the spectator.
This was funny to me because I totally get this! I googled him afterwards to see more of his artwork and it has this black humor that I like.
