In Doce Céu de Santo Antí´nio (Santo Antonio's Sweet Sky) Marepe is photographed standing outdoors, one arm raised, holding a stick of white cotton candy and pointing it up to the blue sky of his hometown Santo Antí´nio de Jesus in Brazil. In the image, the cotton candy's form almost blends with the white, puffy clouds in the bright blue sky, and Marepe appears exultant or triumphant. The work is a playful reference to childhood and memory, recurring subjects in Marepe's work. It also alludes to the artist's sweet, personal relationship to his home town.

Marepe was born in Northeastern Brazil in 1970, and his work reflects a deep connection to the local traditions, history, and customs of the Bahia region. He transforms objects used in everyday life such aluminum basins, plastic buckets, water filters, and telephone cards into sculptural objects that take on a social and poetic significance while questioning the institutional status of the art object. In this respect, Marepe's work is related to Marcel Duchamp's provocative 1917 presentation of a sculpture entitled Fountain that was, in fact, a urinal that the artist purchased from a local iron works.

Duchamp called these objects "readymades" to reflect his use of an already existing object. Marepe refers to his sculptures as "necessities," in order to emphasize their social origins and connection to the subsistence economy of rural Brazil. "Necessities" are transformed by Marepe's artistic intervention into objects with almost spiritual power.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
