Artspace and Monacelli are pleased to announce a new limited edition print by filmmaker and photographer David Ondaatje in celebration of the artist’s new monograph, Water Views: Rivers, Lakes, Oceans , published by Monacelli.

Gaviota Swimmer captures the essence of Ondaatje’s artistic practice, offering a meditation on the power of solitude, the unspoiled beauty of the wilderness, and the unique marvel of coastal water patterns.

“The California coast becomes progressively more wild as one moves north from Santa Barbara. Near Gaviota, the water is a beautiful dark shade of green with kelp forests just offshore. With the sun and my camera directly overhead, I could see deep into the emerald water below as a lone swimmer, fearless, swam parallel to shore.” — David Ondaatje

Limited to only 25 signed and framed editions, the print is accompanied by a signed copy of Water Views , David Ondaatje’s breathtaking new survey of aerial photography. A portion of proceeds from the sale of every limited edition will be donated by the photographer to Human Rights Watch, an organization he has supported for many years, to support climate and environment initiatives.

ABOUT WATER VIEWS

Water Views: Rivers, Lakes, Oceans is a breathtaking overview of the most striking bodies of water from around the world. Photographed with the latest drone technology by filmmaker David Ondaatje, these stunning aerial images celebrate the world’s waterways, shorelines, and their surrounding landscapes

David Ondaatje’s photographs marry advanced drone photography with true artistic vision. Long before taking the aerial photographs published in Water Views, David Ondaatje experimented with newfound perspectives through his lens. Ondaatje creatively captured aerial views as a filmmaker, and as technology evolves, Ondaatje’s photographic images push toward cinematic scale. From the untamed coast of Oregon to the sunny surf spots of southern California, the wilds of western Canada to Florida’s southeast coast and the Caribbean islands, or the still waters of Lake Tahoe to Italy’s Lake Como, Ondaatje’s photography whisks viewers away on a trip to the most incredible landscapes around the globe.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
