Artspace and Phaidon are pleased to present Mount Atom, our first limited edition with contemporary artist William Monk. The new lithograph, which is limited to 50 signed and numbered prints, continues Monk’s investigation into metaphysical paintings. Each edition is encased in a custom portfolio, including a copy of Phaidon’s new publication, William Monk, the first comprehensive monograph on the artist’s work.

Mount Atom presents a surreal vision - a levitating coral form suspended over a textured, pyramid-like mound, bathed in a soft, atmospheric glow. Built up through seven layers of lithographic color, hand-drawn on lithographic limestone combined with hand-drawn photo plates, the work’s surface radiates with quiet intensity. The interplay of foreground, background, and textured repetition forms a visual mantra and exemplifies Monk’s ability to create compositions that feel both timeless and otherworldly.

“The figuration happens in your mind's eye. And so, I hope that the scale is always human, relative to the person looking at the paintings, and makes the person become almost as aware of themselves as they are of the painting, and certainly as aware of the space, so they're not just thinking about an image” - William Monk

Monk is a British-born, New York-based artist whose psychological and often large-scale paintings are held in prestigious public and private collections worldwide. Known for working in series, Monk’s practice explores the emotional terrain of lived experience, dreams, and memory. Mount Atom offers collectors a rare opportunity to engage with these themes on a more intimate scale. Taken together, the Phaidon catalogue and print provide an unprecedented look at Monk’s oeuvre.

William Monk (b. 1977) is an artist known for his enigmatic and vibrant paintings. His work can be found in the collections of the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (NL); Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Fries Museum, Leeuwarden (NL); ING, Amsterdam (NL); The Long Museum, Shanghai; Sifang Museum, Nanjing; Blenheim Art Foundation, UK; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles, among others. Monk was the recipient of the Jerwood Contemporary Painters Prize (2009) and Royal Award for Painting (2005). Monk has been represented by Pace Gallery since 2019, and his dynamic works have featured prominently in Pace exhibitions in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
