This photograph features a leg covered in a bruise that is reminiscent of an iconic image of Jesus Christ. Taken by Bougatsos on her Blackberry, the image is playfully sacrilegious and flippant, while at the same time loaded with heavy symbolism. In some cultures, such a bizarre occurrence would be considered a miracle, attracting pilgrims and alms. Although Bougatsos doesn't seem to interpret the appearance of Jesus on her own leg as a gift from God, she does take care to document its occurrence, thereby pointing out that as much as we think we're immune to superstition, religious iconography continues to command notice, even in the form of kitsch.

The sale of this work will benefit the Young Collectors Council. Over the past ten years, the Young Collectors Council has raised funds to purchase more than 120 works of art for the Guggenheim's permanent collection. The YCC and its Acquisitions Committee is the only group of young professionals in New York City that has made a lasting commitment to support emerging contemporary artists and to expand the collection of a major, internationally recognized museum.

Lizzi Bougatsos, the lead singer for the band Gang Gang Dance, is an underground art and fashion icon. One of the "enfants terribles" in the downtown art scene, Bougatsos has performed with her band at the Whitney Biennial, been interviewed by publications such as The Village Voice and Paper Magazine, and in 2010 was commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum Young Collectors Council.

Bougatsos' work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at James Fuentes LLC, New York, and the Breeder, Athens, Greece. It has also been included in group shows at Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York, NY; Gavin Brown Enterprises, New York, NY; Honor Fraser, New York, NY; Museo d'arte Contemporanea di Roma, Milan, Italy; and White Columns, New York, NY, among others. In 2004, she received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Art Grant, and in 2008, she was featured at the Whitney Biennial.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
