New Books for the New Year: BIG Atlas

For more than two decades, the pioneering Danish firm Bjarke Ingels Group, commonly known as BIG, has created a wide range of architecture that stands proud for its spectacular shapes and imaginative solutions to often incredibly complex challenges.

With a client list that includes Google, Noma, Audemars Piguet, and San Pellegrino, founder Bjarke Ingels is a superstar in the architecture world. Over the course of just twenty years, he’s gone from founding a tiny practice to one that has a team of over 700 people across eight offices worldwide, ranging from its HQ in Copenhagen to London, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Shanghai, Oslo, and Zurich.

Our new book, BIG Atlas, is the first comprehensive monograph to focus on his firm’s finished work, offering an ambitious survey of more than 50 completed projects from all over the world.

From an energy plant topped with a ski slope and a LEGO House that appears to be made out of the famous plastic bricks, these diverse projects—half of which have never been published before—are illustrated by more than 600 stunning photographs and behind-the-scenes plans and drawings. Each project opens with an initial drawing, reproduced at a large scale and printed in shiny silver against vibrantly tinted pages.

Edited and designed by Valentina Ciuffo and Joseph Grima, the duo behind Alcova the design platform in Milan and Miami, the book opens with a foreword by architect Kent Martinussen, followed by an introduction by Joseph Grima. It also includes an essay by Andri Snær Magnason on BIG’s impact on the built landscape of its hometown Copenhagen.

With its striking silver and red design, the cover features a tip-on image of the recently completed Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, making for an arresting package that is sure to look fantastic in any home or office. As innovative as the architecture it celebrates, this volume is the ultimate reference for all things BIG. Take a closer look at BIG Atlas.
