Brussels-based Galerie Champaka, a gallery dedicated to the comic strip art form, is exhibiting new works from Javier Mariscal's signature cartoon series Los Garriris (until 23 April). The selling-show features 50 new works, all of which explore the sprightly universe of Mariscal's cartoon characters Los Garriris, otherwise known as Fermin, Piker and Julian the dog.

Los Garriris is an ongoing project dedicated to the joys of living and has developed over the years. "They were born almost unconsciously, and the Garriris quickly became uncontrolable," explains Mariscal. "They’re as curious as they are dynamic. When I draw them, I often get the impression that it’s them who take the decisions."

Mariscal's works, including drawings for Los Garriris, as well as a wide range of his other animations, are explored in his first monograph Drawing Life. Comics and illustrations are only one facet of Mariscal's versatile output, and this book highlights Mariscal's continuing influence on, and contributions to, design.

Mariscal's projects range from graphic design and quirky prints to product and interior design; his 'Duplex' chair of the 1980s is a design icon, whilst his acclaimed animated movie Chico and Rita (2010) was awarded best feature film at both the Brussels Anima Festival and the Spanish Academy Awards.
