Bodywork Roof, 2006

In Bodywork Roof, Detroit-based artist Liz Cohen poses in a baby pink bikini on the hood of the Trabantamino, a hybrid car she constructed by melding an East German Trabant — a symbol of the socialist Soviet Union—with a Chevrolet El Camino — the ultimate embodiment of American muscle and over-abundance. By adopting the objectified role of pin-up girl adorning a vehicle she built with her own hands, Cohen is able to hybridize her own body, becoming both sex symbol and car mechanic. She challenges the perception of both roles, but even more, she dominates the vehicle underneath her.

Liz Cohen is one of the hottest young artists to emerge on the contemporary art scene in the past year. A Detroit-based photographer and installation artist, Cohen's conceptual practice challenges traditional stereotypes of gender roles and female beauty. Equally assured behind the wheel of her Trabantimino, popping the back wheels, and lying sprawled out in a bikini on the floor of the old East German factory where the original Trabant was constructed, her work speaks to both car lovers and fetishists alike all the while sending an empowering message for women everywhere.

Liz Cohen has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as Salon 94 in New York, Galerie Laurent Godin in Paris, David Klein Gallery in Detroit, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. She has received awards and fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation, Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue, the MacDowell Colony and Akademie Schoss Solitude. Currently, she is the Artist-in-Residence and Head of Photography at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.

• 1 1/4” wide, 3/4” deep, with a 2 1/2” wide mat.
• We generally leave 1/4” - 1/2” of paper showing around the image, to accommodate signatures and for visual appeal.
