Artspace & Phaidon, in partnership with Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, are pleased to announce a new limited edition by Skowhegan alumna, Christina Quarles, entitled Magic Hour. Launched on the occasion of Skowhegan’s 75th Anniversary, proceeds from the sale of the edition benefit the program in honor of Skowhegan alumnus and Trustee David Beitzel (1958–2019) and Darren Walker.

The new exclusive edition Magic Hour (2016/2021) will debut during the preview of Frieze New York art fair, at the Skowhegan booth D4 on Wednesday, May 5 at 11am EDT. An edition of 50, the benefit print is priced at $2,500 USD each, with proceeds from the sale supporting Skowhegan’s summer program.

The edition presents a no-longer extant fresco that Quarles created while she was at Skowhegan during the summer of 2016. Magic Hour showcases Quarles’ seductive and expressive technique and features polymorphous figures arranged in contorted positions bent to the constraints of the picture plane. This unique approach to figuration, as well as Quarles’ mastery of dissolving boundaries between figuration and abstraction, has catapulted her into the upper echelons of the contemporary art canon since her residency at Skowhegan; just one year after completing her MFA at Yale, Jeffrey Deitch dubbed her “the hottest artist in America right now”.

“A lot of the gestural language of my work was well on its way by the time I was at Skowhegan, but there were some key developments in my painting that would happen that summer, specifically that afternoon I made this fresco.”
-Christina Quarles

Christina Quarles was born in Chicago, IL in 1985 and raised in Los Angeles, CA, where she is currently based. Quarles completed her BA at Hampshire College in 2007 with a double concentration in Philosophy and Studio Arts. She earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2016.

Quarles has been the recipient of a number of awards and grants including the Pérez Prize (2019); Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2017); and the Robert Schoelkopf Memorial Traveling Fellowship at Yale University (2015); among others. Work by the artist is featured in the permanent collections of numerous museums worldwide including Tate Modern, London; Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Pérez Art Museum, Miami; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; among others.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
