A composite of GQ's Men and Women of the Year covers for 2018, alongside their feature on Jeremiah and Fabián

Seriously, are Jeremiah Stone and Fabián von Hauske GQ’s Chefs of the Year?

Yes! Our Contra and Wildair chefs are ranked alongside Serena Williams, Michael B Jordan and Jonah Hill in men and women of the year issue

GQ’s end-of-year plaudits tend to go to pretty high-profile, ambitious candidates. The tennis champion Serena Williams, the actor Michael B Jordan, and the movie star and director Jonah Hill all make the 2018 Men and Women of the Year list. Yet the new issue includes two less prominent figures who, rather tend to think of others before themselves.

Jeremiah Stone and Fabián von Hauske of the New York restaurants Contra and Wildair have been named as GQ’s 2018 Chefs of the Year, partly because their places are the kind that “favor the enjoyment of the diner over the ego of the chef and that serve Michelin-starred food without Michelin starred pretence,” writes GQ’s Marian Bull.

“There is no tableside pouring of broth at Contra, not tweezer-applied garnishes and very few animal intestines,” she goes on to write in her profile, praising instead the chefs' restaurants for focusing on “diners and having a good time rather than adhering to any pre-existing script of what a 'nice' restaurant feels like.”
