Phaidon and Artspace are pleased to present day at night, a new series of ten unique embroidered prints on canvas by contemporary artist Michael Raedecker. Released on the occasion of Raedecker’s new comprehensive Phaidon survey, each limited edition includes a signed copy of the publication as well as a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Since the beginning of his career as a painter, Raedecker has incorporated embroidery into his works as a means of challenging the conventional hierarchy of fine art techniques. His new day at night editions include thread, paint, and glitter hand-applied throughout, making each piece a singular work of art.

Raedecker’s practice as a whole is engaged with a process of re-contextualizing familiar ideas and spaces, asking the viewer to question held assumptions. Swimming pools are a recurring subject for Raedecker, who is fascinated by the ways in which paintings of pools can be containers of fantasy, reality, and peculiarity.

“Swimming pools, for me, mean leisure, summertime, and being outside of your usual surroundings. And I am in particular talking about the suburban, outdoor pool here. This is one of the ultimate places that embellishes the pleasure principle. A place created where one can forget the outside world. A carefully created paradisiacal zone where one also simultaneously realises that this is not really real; it is perhaps all too good to be true. But an ideal and powerful prop and construct for a painting.” — Michael Raedecker

Michael Raedecker (b. 1963 in Amsterdam, NL) currently lives and works in London (UK). He received his BA in Fashion Design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (NL), and continued his studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (NL) as well as Goldsmiths College, London (UK). In 2000, Raedecker was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. A major solo museum survey at the Kunstmuseum The Hague is forthcoming in Spring 2024.

His work can be found in public collections internationally, including: Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (NL); Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL (US); Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo (NO); British Council, London (UK); Istanbul Modern Collection, Istanbul (TR); MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Rome (IT); Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (UK); Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (US); Kunstmuseum, The Hague (NL); and Tate, London (UK), among others.

All our frames are manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly and sustainably sourced engineered hardwood for durability and a uniform finish that is free of defects. Frames are available in Black or White Satin and Honey Pecan.

All prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Alpha Cellulose matboard, using an acid-free linen tape. The mat's surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conservation quality foam-core mounting board that will keep the work safe from deterioration over time. Artworks with a deckled or decorative edges will be floated on the matboard, with acrylic spacers to separate the art from the glazing. All mounting is fully reversible, without any potential damage to the art.

All of our frames come with picture quality .090 mm plexiglass, which blocks 66% of UV to prevent color fading from exposure to light, keeping your art protected for years to come. It is now considered the industry standard for artists, museums and galleries throughout the world.
