Sally Mann: The Family and the Land is the title of Mann's exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery, London (until September 2010). The show combines work from the key series which map this American photographer’s long photographic career: Immediate Family, Motherland: Virginia, Deep South, Faces and What Remains. From the unguarded depictions of her young children with which she first came to prominence, to explorations of the landscape around her home, to the shocking yet beautiful studies of the decay of the human body, together they reflect Mann’s artistic impulse to draw on the world around her as subject matter.
This is the first solo show of Mann’s work in the UK. To coincide with the exhibition the artist will be giving a talk on her work at the National Portrait Gallery on 18 June at 7pm.
