How does a collection of vegetarian dishes influenced by Middle Eastern flavours from Salma Hage, author of the bestselling classic, The Lebanese Kitchen sound to you? Well however tempting they may sound we can tell you that they taste a whole lot better - as guests at the launch for Salma's new book, The Middle Eastern Vegetarian Cookbook on Wednesday evening will surely attest.

A definitive, fresh and approachable collection of 150 traditional recipes from an authoritative voice on Middle Eastern home cooking, Salma’s new book is a great way in to consciously reducing your meat consumption - something we should all be looking at - as well as being a perfect introduction to the ancient Middle Eastern culture of largely vegetarian, mezze style dining.

150 or so specially invited guests sampled the flavours on offer from the book at our launch The Gallery, Lexington St, London, this week. At the launch, Phaidon's MD James Booth-Clibborn paid tribute to Salma, highlighting the fact that her previous book The Lebanese Kitchen always appears in the list of the top selling 20 cookbooks.

Drawing inspiration from ancient and prized Phoenician ingredients, from grassy olive oil to fresh figs and rich dates, Salma's new book offers an array of delicious breakfasts and drinks, mezze and salads, vegetables and pulses, grains and desserts. The author and chef shows how to easily make the most of familiar everyday fruits and legumes, as well as more exotic ingredients now widely available outside of the Middle East, with nourishing recipes so flavourful and satisfying they are suitable for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.
