Overview
  • John Constable (1776–1837), a giant of British landscape painting, was one of the most influential painters of the nineteenth century
  • Examines the artist’s life and works through detailed discussion of individual paintings as well as his techniques (including his preparatory oil sketches and his pioneering experimentation in painting en plein air)
  • This accessible monograph clearly establishes Constable’s career within the social and historical context of nineteenth-century Britain, drawing on the very latest Constable scholarship
  • Illustrates all Constable’s most admired paintings, such as Flatford Mill (1817; Tate, London), The Hay Wain (1821; National Gallery, London) and Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds (1823; Victoria and Albert Museum, London), alongside some of his lesser-known portraits, drawings and sketches
