A portrait of a disappearing China: Danny Lyon's photo journal: Deep Sea Diver
Travelling across northern China with a translator named Lolly Pop and a vintage Leica, Danny Lyon's photographs provide a unique perspective
After six trips to China between 2005-2009, American photographer and author Danny Lyon ventures back to his hometown of New York next week for an exclusive public conversation and signing of his limited-edition book Deep Sea Diver: An American Photographer's journey in Shanxi, China (2 June). Lyon will be in conversation with Vince Aletti, photo critic for The New Yorker and Photograph magazine at Phaidon's New York store at 7pm.
Deep Sea Diver charts Lyon's photographic journey through Shanxi, China, with translator Lolly Pop and a vintage Leica. In true "New Journalism" style, Lyon immersed himself in the culture and lives of his subjects and the result is a travel journal, black and white photo book, complete with handwritten annotations and anecdotes.
Lyon will sign copies of his previous book Memories of Myself - a collection of photo-essays from over 40-years of Lyon's career.
