Steve McCurry - Retrospective
Highlights from the Birmingham exhibition that draws on a 20 year career spanning continents and conflicts
How do you set about photographing an iconic figure who has been under house arrest for 15 of the last 20 years?
It's no easy task, says British-born photographer Platon (Platon Antoniou) who was enlisted to photograph Aung San Suu Kyi, the figurehead for Burmese political opposition, for the cover of 10 January 2011 issue of Time magazine.
From what can only be imagined as something out of a film, Platon describes in a video interview with Time.com the lengths he and his fellow reporter, Hannah Beech, went to to gain access to one of the most guarded and adored people alive today - including car chases and back room dealings - and his impression of a most beautiful and elegant woman.
