V&A Dundee: iconic, ambitious and sustainable

From a shortlist of six competing architects, an international panel of judges has selected Kengo Kuma and Associates’ design for the new V&A building in Dundee, Scotland. The museum will have prime position on the banks of the River Tay, greeting visitors as they enter Dundee over the Tay Road Bridge. The vast structure is likely to become one of the most exciting buildings in Europe. 

Kuma’s architecture aims to reinterpret traditional designs for the 21st century using nature and light as sources of inspiration. A large part of the design appeal was its environmentally friendly construction. Horizontal bands comprised of concrete and locally sourced reconstituted stone will be used for the building’s façade. These multiple bands will provide thermal mass, keeping the building warm in the cold Scottish winters, and cool in the summer months.

The V&A at Dundee is anticipated to open in 2014 and aims to promote the understanding of design by hosting international touring exhibitions and showcasing the latest in Scottish design talent.
