J.W. Waterhouse: The Modern Pre-Raphaelite (Royal Academy of Arts, London)

In June, the Royal Academy of Arts will present a major retrospective of Pre-Raphaelite artist, John William Waterhouse RA (1849-1917). The exhibition, which will feature over 40 paintings from both public and private collections, will include such highlights as The Lady of Shalott, 1888 (Tate), Hylas and the Nymphs, 1896 (Manchester Art Gallery), Circe Invidiosa: Circe Poisoning the Sea, 1892 (The Art Gallery of South Australia), and the Royal Academy’s A Mermaid, 1900. These works will be accompanied by studies in oil, chalk and pencil; period photographs; sketchbooks; and the volumes of Tennyson and Shelley that Waterhouse decorated with sketches.

These competition rules shall be binding on you when entering any competition(s) operated by us or any company or website owned or controlled by us from time to time.

1. The competition is not open to employees (or members of their immediate families) of Phaidon Ltd or any subsidiary of Phaidon Ltd or anyone else who is professionally associated with the competition.
2. The closing date for the competition is midnight GMT on 19th June 2009.
3. No purchase is necessary to enter this competition.
4. Only one entry per person.
5. All entries must be submitted via: the online form; email to webinfo@phaidon.com, or in writing in black ink or ball-point pen and submitted by post, together with the entrant’s name, address and e-mail address.
6. Proof of sending post/e-mail/completing an online entry, is not proof of our receipt of your entry. No responsibility can be accepted for entries that are lost, delayed or damaged.
7. The winning entry for the competition will be drawn at random out of the competition database. All eligible entries received by the closing date have an equal chance of winning. Entries not submitted in accordance with the rules or incomplete or illegible entries will be disqualified.
8. If you win a competition, Phaidon will notify you by post and e-mail. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of these terms and conditions.
9. The panel of judges for any competition will be comprised of members of the marketing team of Phaidon Limited together with an independent judge.
10. No part of a prize is exchangeable for cash or any other prize and the prize will not be transferable to another person.
11. If an advertised prize is not available, we reserve the right to offer an alternative prize of equal or greater value.
12. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, Phaidon reserves the right to alter, amend or foreclose the competition without prior notice and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the Phaidon as a result thereof.
13. The winners’ name (first initial and surname) and county of residence may be disclosed to anyone who writes within one month after the closing date, stating the name of the competition and enclosing a stamped addressed envelope, to Phaidon Press Ltd, Digital Team, All Saints St, Regent’s Wharf, London N1 9PA, UK.
14. English law applies and the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts shall prevail.
