The exhibition: Brit Insurance Design Awards 2011
Design aficionado Stephen Bayley and novelist Will Self join the judging panel for the global design scene's definitive awards
Now in its fourth edition, the Brit Insurance Design Awards exhibition - held annually at the Design Museum, London - showcases a year in global product design through seven categories: architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport.
The line-up for 2011 includes an array of nominations, from graffiti art to chairs made from recycled fridges, via interactive LED screens and the ubiquitous iPad, which have been grouped together into five sections: city, play, learn, home and share. This year's category winners are:
Architecture - Open Air Library, KARO Architekten, Germany
Fashion - Uniqlo +J Autumn/Winter '10, Jil Sander for Uniqlo, Japan
Furniture - Branca, Industrial Facility, Italy
Graphics - Homemade is Best, Forsman & Bodenfors for IKEA, Sweden
Interactive - Flipboard, Mike McCue and Evan Doll, USA
Product - Plumen 001, Hulger and Samuel Wilkinson, UK
Transport - Barclays Cycle Hire, Transport for London and Serco, UK
The overall winner from these finalists will be announced by a judging panel chaired by the founder-Director of the Museum, Stephen Bayley, on 15 March. This year's trophy has been designed exclusively by Ross Lovegrove.
Previous winners have included the Folding Plug, by RCA graduate Min-Kyu Choi (which is due onto the market later this year), Shepard Fairey's now-iconic Barack Obama poster and the One Laptop per Child project, by Yves Behar of Fuseproject.
