Stylectrical: Electro-Design That Makes History
Opening hours:
Tuesday - Sunday: 11am until 6pm
Thursdays: 11am until 9pm
Stylectrical - at the Museum für Kunst und Gerwerbe in Hamburg until January 15, 2012 - draws together the designs of Apple's Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, Johnathan Ive and the person he was inspired by, Dieter Rams.
"Prolific and consistent, Rams is defined by what he does rather than what he says," Ive says in the foreword to As Little Design As Possible. "And what Dieter Rams and his team at Braun did was to produce hundreds of wonderfully conceived and designed objects. Rams' ability to bring form to a product so that it clearly, concisely and immediately communicates its meaning is remarkable."
Following in Dieter Rams' pioneering footsteps, Ive's designs have become highly recognisable and consistent products and have proved to be some of Apple's most popular and emulated designs. Among the exhibits in Stylectrical are rarely seen devices such as the eMate300, a laptop from 1997 designed to be used in schools, the iMac Blue Dalmation (literally, spotted like the dog and unusually for Apple, not that popular), and the company's first ever flatscreen computer.
Stylectrical highlights the comparisons between Ive's designs and those of Dieter Rams and Braun, along with hundreds of other works by leading creators in electronics design history.
