Olivier Père selected Jan Bonny as one of the best emerging film directors working today and chose the film Gegenüber (Counterparts) as an example that best represents his work.
Gegenüber (Counterparts) (2007):
Police officer Georg (Matthias Brandt) is very popular among his colleagues for being calm and cool-headed. His partner, Michael (Wotan Wilke Mšhring), also admires him for his seemingly harmonious marriage to Anne (Victoria Trauttmansdorff), an attractive primary-school teacher. After Georg is promoted, he begins to lose “intact” family life. One Christmas, the conflicts that have been dominating the couple’s lives for years start to surface. Anne struggles for recognition, Georg attempts to suit everyone’s needs, and their children helplessly look away from the physical violence that can no longer be hidden.
"In the 2000s, young German directors made films of exceptional vitality and intelligence. Maren Ade, Angela Schanelec, Christoph Hochhäusler, Ulrich Köhler, and a number of others are the avant-garde of what may be called a renaissance in German auteur cinema. Jan Bonny’s name must now be added to this list of talented newcomers. He has directed only one feature film to date, but has made his mark as a very promising director, showing an impressive mas- tery of his subject and the resources at his disposal."
