Works by 10 of the best emerging artists

Chus Martinez, chief curator for the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and associate curator for the 2010 São Paulo Biennial, has selected 10 of the most significant emerging artists (included in Creamier - Phaidon's latest global survey of rising stars on the contemporary art scene).  

Martinez said of her selection of artists: 'These artists are particularly concerned with the question of how to make distinctions, distinctions between what is real and what is imaginary, between sense and absurd, between gesture and agency; ultimately, from whatever angle one may approach these different practices, they always surprise us with a very particular understanding of the meaning of artistic research and its capability to enhance knowledge.'

Martinez says of the individual artists she has chosen:

Armando Andrade Tudela

 Through the use of collage, photography and sculpture, Andrade Tudela investigates the differences between legacies of modernity in Europe and Latin America. The overarching theme to his work could be said to address how we deal with the large amount of images and cultural narratives in life. 

Ibon Aranberri

 Fundamental to Arranberri's work are observation, background research dialogue and documentation. It is difficult to classify, but what is important is to note the exact documentation of events. Aranberri subtly proposes alterations of the iconographical, historical and perceptual meaning of references. 

Alexandra Bachztsis

 Through the medium of performance art, Bachztsis explores how we commodify images, gestures, social attitude and language. All of her performances begin very simply, with emphasis on the signs and symbols we use every day. 

Dave Hullfish Bailey

In his work, Bailey shows the possible interrelations between ways of making the world, constructing a world in which all elements are equally as important. His research based approach meaning that the material form his work takes is an inextricable part of its conceptual subject. 

Lasse Schmidt Hansen

At first sight, Schmidt Hansen's works suggest an interest in design objects, but there is no rigid formula and they are never presented as an installation. The images created are preoccupied with how life is sustained by a logic that surpasses the biographical aspects of the everyday. 

Hassan Khan

Khan has developed his work by using video, music and installation, sculpture, performance and writing. His practice concerns the production of space, both conceptually and physically, through words, objects, films and live performances. 

Maria Loboda

Loboda's work investigates the trafficking between the object and the spirit, rationality and magic. Her method is to trace knowledge through a study of the tension between 'thing' and 'God'. 

Renata Lucas

Lucas attempts to introduce a new vocabulary into site-specific practice by exploring the critical implications of reciprocity as a quality of the built environment, creating a temporary stage for alternate action. 

Miguel Noguera

Representation without reproduction is the most concise way to describe Noguera's work. His performances, which he calls 'Ultrashows', are based on the way in which mental images are created through language and speech. 

Kostis Velonis

Velonis's wooden sculptures speak of different ways of presenting and interpreting form, about the role objects play in a given historical and political context, and how a sculpture constructs or excludes a space for the autobiographical content.
