Thomas Schütte’s sculpture to be installed on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth

Thomas Schütte, featured in the Phaidon Contemporary Artist Series, has a major public sculpture to be installed in Trafalgar Square, outside the National Gallery. This is part of the ongoing Fourth Plinth project and will replace Marc Quinn's sculpture of Alison Lapper.

Awarded the Golden Lion at the 51st Venice Biennale, German artist Thomas Schütte (b.1954) is concerned with models for living and rules for making art. Schütte's art looks utilitarian - offering shelter, sustenance and companionship. His sculpture for the Fourth Plinth, called Model for a Hotel 2007, is no different: it is in the shape of an architectural model composed of three blocks. Translucent, it will collect and reflect the light and thus become part of the important historical buildings around Trafalgar Square.

Thomas Schütte’s sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square will be unveiled on Wednesday 7 November 2007.
